One of the most popular tour activities on Bali is a visit to the Batur Volcano in Kintamani. An attractive part of the island, Kintamani also features the large Lake Batur which is a popular hiking area. Tours also include a look at the surrounding countryside and villages; a visit to the Tampak Siring Temple; and being immersed in local culture.
Kintamani is in the northern, mountainous part of Bali with the 1,700m high Mount Batur the main attraction. This massive active volcano is 30,000 years old and features a caldera several kilometres wide which Lake Batur occupies part of it. It’s also possible to do a complete guided hike of the volcano and lake exploration more thoroughly. A Kintamani Volcano Tour also explores the Holy Spring Water Temple at nearby Tampak Siring.
This town is to the south of Mount Batur and is made famous by the Tirta Empul temple. The water spring is popular with locals and visitors. It’s both known for its beauty and supposed therapeutic properties. The Gunung Kawi Temple is also a popular attraction in this area. A Kintamani Volcano Tour includes a Barong Dance at Batubulan village, complete with traditional orchestra and handicrafts.
There’s also the chance to learn about gold and silversmith work at the village of Celuk, together with wood carving at Mas. Tegenungan Waterfall is another popular stop off point and is especially impressive in the wet season. Also en route are the royal Palace and the monkey forest in the arty retreat of Ubud. Other tours worth considering are a Mount Batur Trekking Expedition or, alternatively, a trek of the neighbouring Mount Agung.
Although Mount Batur is a large mountain, a tour typically includes an easy trek of around two hours and is okay for those of moderate fitness. Though still active, the mountain is safe to climb but keeping abreast of the current volcanic activity is recommended. Tour guides are well trained and are members of the Association of Mount Batur Trekking Guides. This trip is good for most ages with discounts for children up to 10 years old.
The weather in Bali is nice year round though a Kintamani Volcano Tour is best done outside of the December to March wet season. Its cooler high up on the mountain and also not so humid in June and July. The wearing of sturdy shoes and having a jacket for cooler days is recommended.
