Visit Hokkaido during winter in Japan and explore the World Heritage Site of Shiretoko. It is one of Japan's most beautiful and unspoiled national parks. During winter, the peninsula's coast along the Sea of Okhotsk becomes one of the regions where you will see drift ice. It appears during the months of late January until early April as ice drifts across the Sea of Okhotsk from northeastern Russia. The best time to visit is during the second half of February. Shiretoko Peninsula and the coast around Abashiri receive the biggest amounts of ice every year.

Experience an Ice Walk Tour as a tour guide leads you out onto the ice at the Okhotsk Sea while dressed in wetsuits for 90 minutes. You will observe the animals living on and beneath the ice while walking. You should be at least 130 centimeters tall to join the tour. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
