The beaches boast no shortage of pristine white sand and the sparkling azure waters are filled with colourful corals and tropical fish on the island of Phuket. In addition to its status as Thailand's largest island, Phuket has also become one of this Southeast Asian nation's most legendary beach holiday destinations.

Phuket has fully recovered from the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami which devastated much of its west coast, home to most of the best known beaches on this island which measures no more than 21kms at its widest and 48kms at its longest point. Patong is the biggest, liveliest, and most developed of Phuket's beach resorts, while Karon ranks a close second. Another busy beach on Phuket's west coast, Kata, is best known for its surfing and is divided into two smaller beaches called Kata Noi and Kata Yai.

However, there are also plenty of Phuket beaches which are more suitable for sunbathers who prefer more peace and quiet. Kamala, one of the west coast's most tranquil beaches, lies not far northwest of Patong. Phuket's most secluded beach getaways, however, are situated on its lesser developed southeast coast.

Southeast Phuket's most populous community, Chalong Bay, acts as a departure point for Phi Phi island tours. Even more island hopping excursions begin at Rawai, whose main attraction is the Phuket Seashell Museum. Another southeast Phuket community, Cape Panwa, contains the Phuket Aquarium and Marine Biological Research Centre.

Phuket International Airport stands directly north of one of the island's largest green spaces, Sirinat National Park. One of this seaside park's four major beaches, Hat Mai Khao, is an important sea turtle nesting area as well as Phuket's longest beach. The months between November and February are the egg laying season for Sirinat National Park's sea turtles. A causeway connects mainland Phuket to Ko Sire, a smaller island best known for its sea gypsy colony.

Far fewer tourists venture into Phuket's interior, but those visitors are missing out on spectacular sights such as the Phuket Orchid Garden and the Khao Phra Taew Wildlife Sanctuary. The heavily forested wildlife sanctuary is also home to the Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, which adopts and prepares captured gibbons to be reintroduced to their natural habitat.

Phuket Town, despite its status as the island's capital and most populous community, is another place which is often overlooked by tourists. This picturesque community does, however, have much more to offer beyond its bus stations and Rassada Pier ferry terminal to the islands of Koh Yao and Phi Phi.

The most impressive sights in Phuket Town are its well preserved Chinatown, 19th century Old Phuket Mediterranean mansions, and Khao Rang Hill summit views. The whole of southern Phuket and its surrounding islands can be seen from Khao Rang Hill on clear days. Phuket Town is also home to the island's most impressive museums like the Phuket Cultural Centre, Thaihua Museum, and Phuket Culture Museum. The Phuket Butterfly Farm and Phuket Zoo are a couple more must see attractions for animal lovers.
