Seoul is a sprawling metropolis and the capital city of South Korea. It boasts a long and rich history and a lovely collection of cultural masterpieces that reflect this. Seoul excites with its wonderful assortment of contemporary attractions and places to enjoy a gourmet meal or an evening’s fun and entertainment. The city’s prime location in the northwest corner of the Korean Peninsula is ideal for embarking on unique tours.
The city’s most recognisable sights are the soaring Namdaemun and Dongdaemun gateways. A selfie with one of these historic structures in the background is something that few overseas or even out-of-town Koreans miss out on. The medieval Joseon Dynasty palace complexes are another major draw for history and culture buffs.
Mt Inwang and its landmark temple, the infamous Seodaemun Prison and its macabre cells and the National Museum of Korea are all unmissable sites. The collection of artefacts and exhibits at the museum details the country’s passage through time and is rated as the finest facility of this genre in the nation. The Korean Folk Village is another excellent location for insightful glimpses of Korean heritage and history. A tour is a must for visitors.
The district of Bukchon is where all the dignitaries and royal servants resided in days of yore. Around 900 of their houses are still standing. The contrast of these traditional Korean structures surrounded by modern ones presents an unusual spectacle. Bukchon is now one of the city’s hubs for fashion, dining and cultural venues.
Other destinations firmly fixed on the Seoul tourism trail are the National War Memorial and its associated museum and the Trickeye Museum. Namsan Tower, AKA N Seoul Tower, is accessible by cable car and offers sweeping views from its observation decks. The Teddy Bear Museum is one of the tower’s other string of reasons to visit and always a smash hit with kids.
As well as tours of the Korean Folk Village, there are plenty of other options for those wishing to get out and about and enjoy the exoticism of this vibrant city. In the city, tours of Gyeongbok Palace and the other royal complexes, a boat cruise on the Han River and street food tours are the principal choices.
Tours to Nami Island and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) are the two most booked tours to regional locations. Skiing Tours increase possibilities during the winter months with resorts such as Phoenix Park, Jisan Forest Resort and Daemyung Vivaldi only two hours at most by car. Snowboarding is also available and popular with youngsters not ready to ski yet.
Lotte World, the 3,000 inmates at Seoul Zoo, COEX shopping and lifestyle mall, Olympic Park and Yeouido Park are other highlights likely to appeal to young and old alike.
